Service Description
A week-long ceramics program for teens who want to try something genuinely cool with their summer. Over five mornings, students learn wheel throwing, handbuilding, and surface design from working ceramicists — Maria Sartori (AP Art teacher at Needham High School) and Ellie Layton. Class is capped at 10 students with two instructors (5:1 ratio) so everyone gets serious time at the wheel and individual help with their projects. No prior experience needed — if you've never touched clay before, this is where you start. If you've thrown before, we'll push you further. What the week looks like: Monday — Get your hands dirty. Studio tour, meet your instructors, and dive into the basics. By the end of the morning, every student has made something on the wheel. Tuesday — Wheel day. Real time at the wheel with one-on-one coaching. Cylinders, bowls, and the start of taller forms. Expect to make a few pieces you actually want to keep. Wednesday — Handbuilding. Slab construction, coil-building, and forms you can't make on the wheel. This is where a lot of students find the technique that clicks for them. Thursday — Make what you want. Plan and build a piece that's yours — a mug for your morning coffee, a planter for a plant you actually own, a sculptural piece, a set of dishes. Instructors guide, you decide. Friday — Glaze and share. Underglaze painting, surface decoration, and final touches. We end the week with a studio show-and-tell over snacks before pieces head off for their 3–4 week kiln journey. What's included: All clay, tools, glazes, kiln firings, and aprons. Each student leaves the week with 4–6 pieces in the kiln pipeline. Schedule: Monday–Friday, July 6 – 10, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM Instructors: Maria Sartori, AP Art teacher at Needham High School and ceramicist, and Ellie Layton, experienced ceramics instructor. Pickup: Finished glazed pieces are ready approximately 4 weeks after the session (kiln schedule). What to bring each day: Closed-toe shoes, clothes that can get messy, a water bottle, and a snack. We'll provide everything else. Price: $879 (includes all materials, instruction, and firing) Drop-off opens at 7:50 AM. Pickup at 12:00 PM.
